Every-Belly Dance Now / Belly Dance Workshop
Saturday November 9th, 12:00-2:00pm
Instructor: Shannon Townsend
Experience Shannon Townsend’s uniquely inclusive approach to fusion belly dance! Whether you are new to belly dance or you can bust out ¾ shimmy with the best of them, this workshop will have something for you. This adjustive, adaptive workshop is perfect for any level and ability of dancer. All ages, genders, body types and abilities are invited to participate. Shannon takes a somatic approach that resonates well with students of all levels, challenging while having fun and attuning participants with their bodies!
Every-Belly Dance Now starts with a gentle warm-up that can be done a variety of ways, ramping up slowly to build strength. Participants are encouraged to use tools such as chairs, mats, bolsters or whatever helps them be comfortable as the body opens using breathing techniques, gentle stretches, and some light cardio to get the blood moving.
From there movement takes over as we examine what Shannon calls the ‘bread n butter’ movements. Attendees will learn how to engage movements muscularly, working WITH the body instead of against it! Muscular technique is smaller and more controlled which means less strain on the joints. Shannon’s methodology of movement will challenge you at your own level, linking movement at YOUR speed and creating cohesive connectivity while working up a sweat and laughing the whole way!
About Shannon: Shannon Townsend began studying Belly Dance in numerous forms in 2004. Her mission is to create a radiant and innovative experience while un-apologetically taking up space and finding strength through muscular movement. As a coach, she focuses on safe and innovative instruction for all ages, sizes, and abilities of the body. As a performer, she uses movement arts to connect with people, to stir emotions and feelings and engage all individuals from various walks of life by presenting her own body as a means of explaining that there is worth in all humans, that we all deserve to exist and present our art and share our unique beauty with the world. She works as a coach, instructor, trainer, show producer, and professional performer. Read all about her history and background at www.inventivemovement.com
